I was recently asked why I loved science. Without hesitation I replied, "It is the thrill of the chase."The puzzled expression on the face of my questioner spurred me to add that, "I love science because, whilst I am trying to find a solution to a problem or find an answer to a question, I have this underlying feeling of excitement that I am only one experiment away from a big breakthrough."
On reflection, this is also one reason why I love teaching science. Every time students start a new experimental investigation, there is this sense that they are embarking on a journey into the unknown and that they too are just one experiment away from making an entirely new discovery.
